This wasn't what I expected, but I truly enjoyed this book! Jacob has just lost his grandfather in a horrifying manner, but no one believes him when he tells them how it happened. He is reeling from his loss when he discovers a letter written to his grandfather that may help explain the mystery that has surrounded him. Growing up Jacob Portman looked forward to his Grandfather Abe's stories and photos about his life during WWII. As Jacob becomes a teenager he finds that his grandfather's stories are fake without a shred of truth to them. However when Jacob finds his grandfather badly injured mumbling that he should have told Jacob sooner then dies. Jacob falls into a depressed state that nothing will snap him out of it. I really wanted to like this story from the front cover alone, but I just found the writing lacking at some points and it really started to drag especially toward the middle of the book. Yes, the vintage photos scattered throughout were interesting, but the story just fell flat for me. I guess I am surprised this is considered a Young Adult book also, at times it seems the writing was for a much younger target audience.
Wow - I really was not thinking that I would enjoy this book as much as I did. I am not really into things that can't be explained, and worried this would be too far out there - but it was very well written and I loved the way the author incorporated the pictures into the story! Very well done. I can't wait to read the sequal....
