It is impressive to see how many stories/retellings/adaptations have been made from this charming little fairy tale.

Andrew Lang's version (based on the original by Madame de Villeneuve)in the The Blue Fairy Book, is very close to Robin McKinley's 'Beauty'.

The writing is flawless, each description of the castle, the dresses, the forest, are enchanting ( as if they had a voice on their own), and even Beauty's back story feels more reasonable for a modern reader.

This is more like 3.5 stars, but I couldn't quite bring myself to mark it at a 4! Though the Beauty and the Beast legend has never been my favorite (both the Villeneuve and the Beaumont versions), for some reason I always enjoy retellings of this tale. I think because so much is left vague and undeveloped in the personalities of the protagonists in the most common versions, that there's much to work with in fictionalized retellings, particularly when it comes to gender dynamics. I absolutely love the story of Beauty and the Beast, but I rarely find one that makes me have all the feelings of the movie with a bit of a twist. This book wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable either. ...more
