What Members Thought
If you have read any other review about this book you know that even though it takes place in the near future, it is largely preoccupied with 1980's pop culture: movies, video games, board games, music, and television shows. This however doesn't speak much to the story or characters. What I haven't heard yet, is that it is actually very much like Willy Wonka and His Chocolate Factory. The plot is extremely similar, except that instead of a chocolate factory, it's a massive virtual world/game. It

Loved this book, it didn't hurt that everything the author wrote about are also things that I love. Wargames is my favorite movie and I was happy to see it have such an important role in the story.

Ok this was my second reading and I still love it, I know that it's a wish fulfillment fantasy, but after just reading the first 6 Elric novels I needed a dose of lighthearted adventure. While I'm a little older then intended audience, I had a blast in the 80's, first video-game system, fi ...more

I'm old enough that I played all the games, listened to all the music, watched all the 80s pop culture referenced in here extensively. The game Adventure - I remember when I beat that game. I was in fifth grade and it took me forever. It was so new and different, but when I finally did beat it I started screaming and jumping up and down with excitement. Then this conversation ensued:
Mom: "Geez Michael, it's just a game."
Me: "No, it's not just a game. You don't understand. I've been trying to bea ...more

Okay, this book is fun, interesting, nostalgic, terrible and boring in many parts, and often dumb and annoying as fuck (aka dumb and annoying as a hormonal teenager), but I pretty much decided to live or die with it early on, when the MC proclaimed his love for the movie Ladyhawke.
I mean, yes, the book dredged up memory after memory of my childhood and adolescence, but I remember when I first saw Ladyhawke, and I loved i!
It was either on tv or VHS, and I was probably under 10 years old. I watc ...more

This is the book I wish I would have written.
Deep fried in 80s culture, this was a walk through my childhood.
I'm sure it didn't hurt that the internet archive released over 700 Jmame compatible browser games, and that I was doing spring cleaning and found my old notes on Zork I, II, and III.
Ah, I want to read this to my children and go the arcade with them.
A simply wonderful book for those who grew up in the 80s.
I was advised to get the Audiobook version, which is read by Wil Wheaton, which I ha ...more

I want to live in the OASIS.
Any time I want a light easy read or need a pick-me-up I turn to Ready Player One. The words are always the same, but the adventures of Parzival, Art3mis, and Aech never disappoint me. I love all of it. The impossible odds, the love story, the puzzles. Every single bit is a piece of magic. The references to old video games, movies, television and everything else are like pieces of my past dripping off the page.
I cant' stress this enough. If you're wondering "should I ...more

Awesome! This definitely brought back fond memories of playing RPG games. Wondering if there is anything else similar to this book that I can read...
Oh yes, I've just discovered that there is: a newish genre called LitRPG!
