In Amsterdam, right across from the Central Station, is the Victoria Hotel. Right in the middle of the building's facade, there are two houses; the owners refused to sell their house and the hotel was build around them. This novel is about the (fictional) owner of one of these houses, Vedder, as he gets the offer to sell his house for the hotel that is about to be build.

Magistraal! Wat een boek. Misschien wel het beste wat ik ooit uit de Nederlandse literatuur heb gelezen. Oké, je moet ervan houden, van het archaïsche taalgebruik en de omfloerste wendingen van zinnen. Aanvankelijk bezat ik juist daarom weerzin om dit boek te gaan lezen. Doordat ik al wist van Rosenboom's stijl en doorwrochte kennis van de late negentiende eeuw vermoedde ik rondom hem een bedompte zolderkamergeur.
