I have spent the last day and a half trying to come up with the words that will adequately express my feelings about this book. For now, all I can say is that this is the most important book I have read in a LONG time. I feel that anyone and everyone who can get a copy of this book should read it.

I found myself laughing (mainly at Maverick....that dude is funny with his one liners), crying at multiple places, cheering for Starr and hating on a couple certain people. All in all, I can definitely

I have read this book as a buddy read and It was worth it. I had heard of this book and I did want to read it. After the George Floyd event I think a lot of people should read it. It makes you think.

This book is both shocking and super powerful and tragically all too relevant today.

The story follows Starr through a really rough time in her life after she is witness to an officer shooting and killing her unarmed young black male friend. The story shows that Starr has already witnessed a lot of death in her life after having her other best friend shot down in a drive-by shooting when she was only 10. The book looks at racism and prejudice and the issues faced with being in an interracial rela

This book blew me away, it is absolutely phenomenal. I picked it up and could not put it down, Starr narrates her story beautifully. She lives in two worlds, her home in what she straight up calls the ghetto and her fancy private school. She feels like a stranger in both because she's afraid to be herself, to be honest, to move past stereotypes and ignore what others think she should be. She's seen tragedy, not just her friends getting shot right in front of her, but the every day oppression and ...more

This is an intense book about the sad reality of what it is like to be African American and at the mercy of trigger-happy cops. The narrator, Starr, lives in two worlds, the private school life of white privilege and her poor neighborhood roots. On a fateful evening, her life is shattered when her childhood friend is pulled over and fatally shot. Suddenly, Starr is launched into the spotlight as a key witness in a police investigation. The brutal honesty shines through the pages.
