This was a book club read and lent to an excellent discussion.
It is both sad and inspiring.
You can get lost in the book and really imagine being there because of the beautiful way it is written.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was WONDERFUL and I highly recommend it. It's the story of two Chinese girls who become lao tongs (forever friends) and their nu shu (secret language for women) which they write on a fan that is transported back and forth between their towns. A beautiful book that will take you through a series of emotions. This fictional story reads like memoir and for that reason you’re not scared for the narrator when she’s put in dangerous situations but you get to feel the emotions as she is forced to deal with the mortality of others and relationships. The author does a fantastic job of really making you feel for the charac ...more

On the plus side this book contains lots of interesting stuff about women's lot in rural 19th century China, keen observations about human relationships, and beautiful prose. On the negative side it is as dismal as a foggy midnight in a miasmic swamp with an entertainment value of zilch. Read only if you are feeling masochistic and want to make yourself miserable. ...more

Not perfect, but beautiful. The story tells of long ago Chinese culture, but links to a modern understanding of love and friendship. The language gets repetitive, but that is a small fault overall.
