Epic.

Not everyone can evoke their own country in print. Verghese describes Ethiopia and I can smell the charcoal, roasting coffee, open sewage, truck exhaust, eucalyptus, and sheep dip. Do I understand Ethiopians better. Nope. But I know that'll never happen. I do understand the Ethiopian version of the old saw: "Better the devil you know than the ANGEL you don't." This book was a delight because of the beautifully observed details that seamlessly transported this reader into the story of two twins growing up in a missionary hospital in Addis Ababa. It reads somewhat nostalgically like a big, old-fashioned John Irving narrative with the entire world at its feet. I almost literally could not put it down. Sadly didn't make it to the book group discussion that prompted me to read this book, but need to add that I loved this story.

From the complicated births of Marion and Shiva, through their interesting childhoods, and into their reunion with their father in America, this book was full of insightful, beautiful prose. How characters were woven in and out of the twin's lives and interwoven into their destinies was not always realistic, but made a good story.

What a wonderful book to read as the year ends. Loved the writing, the plot, the characters, the locale. Excellent. I bought one to give to my niece who is in medical school. She'll love it.
