I had a hard time getting into this story at the beginning but by halfway I was completely hooked. I was invested in what was happening to Sal and her grandparents and finding out about Phoebe's story. I loved the way the author weaved together the past and present and created a seamless story. ...more

I am not at all sure how much youth would enjoy this book.... but older middle grade students who DO read it would certainly gain new perspectives. As an adult reading the book my heart broke a bit, and it was bittersweet, and impactful. A very good second book for middle grade march and one that will stay with me for quite a while.

Wow! One of the best books I’ve read in quite a while. Not just for middle grade children. The quirky voice of the child narrator/heroine, Salamanca Hiddle, so succinctly plumbs the depths of emotion when dealing with mother-loss. The author’s quick pace and unexpected twists made this a page turner as well as a tear jerker. Will be rereading it again.

Liked it but would not recommend it as a children's book. More Teen like.
A Native American girls adjusts to the absence of her mother. Throughout the story, you are getting 2 stories. As Salamanca heads to Utah with her grandparents, she tells the story of her friend, Phoebe. Phoebe has a more dramatic view on life while Salamanca has more practical approach. The two stories weave a unique tale that will teach you not to "not judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins."

Quirky, understated, and wonderful. This is my kind of middle grade book.
