4.5 🐙

An 🐙 named Marcellus is one of three points of view offered up here, and my favorite. As many other reviewers have stated, I've felt an affinity for octopuses since watching My Octopus Teacher on Netflix. That was an unusually sweet treat; this was the chocolate fudge icing. They really are remarkably bright creatures!

I had the ending more or less figured out with one major change, but I suppose that was the intention. I liked my ending better as it left zero questions unanswered, but again

A solid 3 star book. I enjoyed Marcellus, the octopus, and the setting since I lived in WA state for almost 10 years. The descriptions of the area were spot on. Everything was just a little too predictable and wrapped up exactly how I expected it would. One of the main characters, Cameron, was written more as petulant teenager than a 30 year old man. That is how I envisioned him the entire book. He was very annoying and whiny. I was really hoping for more of the story from the octopus's point of ...more

A 30 year old Californian with no family except for an aunt, has serious difficulties adulting. A 70 year old Washingtonian who cleans an aquarium part-time befriends an octopus. An octopus who is confined to an aquarium tank understands human behavior and the English language better than most humans. This novel brings these characters together in a sweet story propelled by incredible coincidences and a universe filled with goodness and caring. I can see why this is popular, but I need at least ...more

4.5
This was such a delightful book with mostly wonderful characters, Marcellus, the octopus, and Tova, the elderly sprightly woman. Cameron was occasionally annoying with him being a man-child. Even the side characters were all likable. I also liked how grief was an underlying theme throughout the whole book. It made it have more depth. My only complaint is that I wanted more of Marcellus!

This one has me up too late on a school night; I was so into the story by the second half! I loved every character, but especially the star, Marcellus. It was a slow starting book, but really enjoyable, with so many themes for thought or discussion: aging, community, growing up, loss, grief, moving on, the family we choose, hoarding, and on.... A great one for a book club
