Huh. What an entirely bizarre and interesting series.

It's a western/horror fable. It's told by a butterfly to a dead rabbit. It's about death and his kin.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of it after a full volume, because it's more about the story than the characters, but that story is strangely enthralling because it's so bizarre with its mix of western and horror with myth-building.

I'm interesting in seeing this world continue to expand.

The only reason to read this is for the art, which really is "pretty." The story, though, doesn't make much sense and as the second recent book to follow the adventures of Death personified (see also Jonathan Hickman's much better East of West), this just seems to be pretentious and pointless. I'm not familiar with DeConnick's other work, but if it runs along these lines, I'm not sure why she's so praised in the comics world--are there so few women writers that we have to fall over ourselves to ...more

Wow! This was a perfect choice for me. What happens when Death falls in love? Pick this up to find out.

First off, I really dug the setting. Basically a Western with some fantasy elements. The art really drives this home. The story seems a bit disconnected at first. There are multiple pairs of characters and it moves between them to introduce each one and tie them together. Butterfly and Rabbit act as narrators, Sissy and Fox are a father/daughter con team, and Alice and Ginny are Death's assassi

This is one of my new favorite series, I cannot wait to get my hands on volume 2!

Basically you follow the different threads of Death, his daughter and the girl with the different colored eyes.

The art was beautiful and the concept for the story was interesting and executed very well. A lot of people are making the argument that this work is pretentious. I think that the author is trying to set a tone of severity, one on par with telling an epic tale.

This is my second time trying to read this book, but this time I succeeded! The first read through felt very abstract and chaotic. However, reading the entire book in one sitting, then going back and flipping through it again really helped me pull all the piece together. There are an awful lot of metaphors that connect to life, death, and rebirth. I felt like the colors really pulled the tone and setting of the book together and complemented the feeling of being in a desert landscape.

Liked it but found the narrative structure slightly confusing.
