I just really needed a reread to get me out of an almost book slump limbo. I had been so unmotivated to read for abotu a week, but I figured it was the perfect time to revisit this after watching To All the Boys I've Loved Before when it premered on Netflix. The movie was so good and I want to go back into this world so I new it was the perfect reread choice. I didn't really feel like a full review was in order so here are some random thoughts from when I was reading...

So I quite loved the first book, the sequel was good but not nearly as good as "To All the Boys I've Loved Before." I wasn't captured by the whole first half of this book. It was just eh to me. The magic of Peter was not reinforced by any of Lara Jean and his interactions. In fact, other than a necklace and a brave stage jumping I'm not sure these two had any special moments before the end. This was quite sad to me, because the lovely John Ambrose McClaren had man 3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 Stars.

This was quite sad to me, because the lovely John Ambrose McClaren had many, many such moments.

I'm not abandoning Peter by any means, I'm still a fan of the kid but I felt he got the short end of the stick. And there is something so right about John. Some alluring element about the "star crossed lovers" meeting later and getting a chance to make it all work. Of course, we are talking about 16 year old kids. So I wasn't surprised at all by what Lara Jean chose. I liked that her learning about Gen really helped her to understand Peter:

"There's a Korean word my grandma taught me. It's called jung. It's the connection between two people that can't be severed, even when love turns to hate. You still have those old feelings for them; you can't ever completely shake them loose of you; you will always have tenderness in your heart for them."

And I liked this bit of her Korean heritage actually coming out in the story!

I was sick and tired of the video issue and how the whole deal got shuffled off to the side. I'd have liked a better or earlier resolution to this. By the time her and Peter got to the truth no one cared anymore! Then why did we waste half a book on it?! Hmmm, tell me that! Another visit to an estate sale would have been nice or over at his house with his mom. Any thing that resembled a date!

Once we got to the tree house and the game the story really picked up. Still it didn't really have much to do with Peter. I did love the whole cake walk. That was a strong scene and really was what the story lacked - more moments like this!

I think readers who didn't enjoy book one probably liked book two better. It was more "grown up" i.e. it had sex talk. It arose naturally from the story which I really appreciate and I liked the stance Lara Jean took. I thought Stormy was really not a woman to be dispensing advice on the subject though. The angst with Gen also seemed more like what detractors wanted for conflict in book one so it almost felt like this is what some readers wanted for a first book. As a second book though I thought it worked better.

I appreciated how Lara Jean grew up even it I'm not totally in line with her thoughts. The end was rather a forgone conclusion with this "advancing" Lara Jean.

BOTTOM LINE: I'm down to read more about Lara Jean growing up. ...more

Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter, well I didn’t expect it either. I was really surprised that Lara Jean actually love Peter but what I didn’t expect the most was Peter loving Lara Jean back, even though I think Lara Jean was Peter’s not kind of woman. Peter is the kind of guy that’s opposite of Lara Jean. They’re like fire and water. But the way they work their relationship is a proof to me that opposites really do attract.

This book gave me a lot of emotions -giddy, annoyance, feels, and many more. Especially that in this book, Peter got a little preoccupied of things that really left Lara Jean doubting and hurt. Because of it, I’m also doubting if Peter really did love Lara Jean. There were things he can’t say to her which really suck because she’s his girlfriend, for real this time, and he’s not talking to her about things that could help get rid of whatever doubt Lara Jean is feeling. But then again, never immediately jump to conclusions if you don’t know the whole situation. That’s just what happened to Lara Jean.

John Ambrose McClaren is the guy who came back form Lara Jean’s past. When he appear, the story became more interesting. They became rivals, John and Peter. They compete for Lara Jean. It’s a cute love triangle even though the result is pretty obvious. I’m shipping Lara Jean and Johnny because they feel good together. Johnny is just the right guy for Lara Jean but I know that if it really happened, that Lara Jean change sides and went to Johnny, their relationship would be a bit boring. Johnny is a good guy, not to mention a pretty boy, but he and Lara Jean has the same rhythm and they won’t give spice on their relationship if ever.

And it’s pretty obvious that Lara Jean is just confuse of her feelings towards Johnny because the last time she saw him, she still likes him. And the sudden come back was a shock that lead Lara Jean to think that she still likes him. Of course, that’s all my opinion because it’s not stated in the book, Lara Jean didn’t mention that.

The ending though, it made me want to demand for a third book. For real, I still want to know what happened to Peter and Lara Jean after they kissed in their tree house. There’s still more to this book, I know. I just hope Jenny Han will create a third book of this. ...more

I was so ready for this book to be good. More Lara Jean more Peter Kavinsky AND a whole new plot!! It was like a dream.

This is the second book in the to all the boys I’ve loved before series. Taking that in account if I was going to compare it I’d say I didn’t like this one AS much. It felt slightly pointless it was literally a drag at some point.

Ever since seeing the Netflix Original To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before late last summer, I have been obsessed with Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky! I’m sure I am not alone haha. Of course, I had to get my hands on the book and lo and behold I find out it is a series. The second in the series has Lara Jean in a real relationship with Peter, but one of the other letter recipients comes back into her life.

I’m sure I am not alone haha. Of course, I had to get my hands on the book and lo and behold I find out it is a series. Lara Jean is a junior and in her first relationship. I feel that her character is emblematic of that kind of young love, seeming that this is her forever – all or nothing. Her curiosity and naivety is comical yet realistic as someone in this stage of life when it comes to having a boyfriend in high school.

“I’ve heard people say that the more you like someone, the more you think they are beautiful even if you didn’t think so in the beginning” (Han, 42)

Personally, this I believe to be true. Most of the guys I end up with I see more clearly physically than I had when we were first friends. It is an interesting realization and demystifies the whole love at first sight feeling.

“And besides, isn’t this the way one loses boyfriends, by acting paranoid and jealous and insecure? I’m fairly certain this is not a good look on me” (Han, 74)

We see Lara Jean struggle with this throughout the book as Peter still seems connected with Genevieve. I get it, I’ve been there. This year, however, I’m working on letting go and stopping those automatic negative thoughts (ANTs). It is not healthy and we see Lara Jean spiraling as she encompasses all three of these characteristics – a natural reaction regardless of maturity. Lara Jean processes these thoughts internally and with her sisters, sometimes using baking as her crutch – a trait she and I share. I also love how she throws herself into her volunteer internship at the retirement community. Her creativity and drive are compelling and humbling. She breathes life into the people and places she cares about, maintaining and building strong bonds.

Overall, I flew through this second installment in the series (thank you snow-filled winter weekend!) and can see how Lara Jean was stuck between Peter and the other letter recipient. I think she made a great choice, and I am hopeful it will yield an honest and positive love. 🙂

If it couldn’t get any better, Netflix announced over the winter holidays that they will be making a sequel! ...more
