I remembered the studpidity of people going where they were told strikes were aimed. Also remembered what happened to Mike, though I also vaguely remember Brin or someone using this theme.
The harshness of the story and the anarchy of Prof, keep it from being a 5 for me. I prefer a bit more optimism. However, there is a lot to think about in this.
Maybe we should recommend it to Obama. If you want real change you shouldn't compromise.

This review might not be entirely fair, as I "read" this book via the audio version. Unfortunately, the lead character is a Russian (undoubtedly a bigger deal when originally written than now, given the Cold War and all that), but the Russian accent is not really something I care to spend ten hours listening to, especially when so many words are dropped out in an attempt to make it more legit. Having said that, the reader technically does an excellent job (the other voices are very well done).

I think the ideas expressed in this one are among his best - as good as Stranger in a Strange Land, but a different angle - but the writing style (slangy pseudo-Russian stream of consciousness - not as well done as A Clockwork Orange) was distracting. It was close enough to standard English that you "get used to it" but every time I picked up the book after a pause I had to get into it again.
