This is a hard book to describe and to review. As far as the story goes, I really enjoyed the first half or so and then it got slow. But this book is not meant to just be entertaining. I won’t soon forget this book. Engrossing and poignant story for our times (probably forever ).
While reading, I felt a joy for the characters/style but also a haunting sense of unease over the new awareness sinking into my consciousness.

Magical and real, doors open and doors close. Though very sad, I think it touches on deep themes concerning humanity and the meaning of life. A book to ponder.

I thought the fantasy element would ruin this for me, but it ended up working. Compelling and heartbreaking, but not without hope.

There's a quiet and unassuming quality to this novel, and such beautiful prose. Such a respect for humanity in Hamid's writing, and a hope I didn't know I needed.
