Tough to read, and incredibly depressing - this is a classic of post-apocalyptic fiction and I'm glad to have read it - divided into three parts (like Gaul) and to relate much more would be spoiling (I was quite disappointed that a main character did not reappear at the end). While the themes aren't at all out of date, some of the science is, of course (and the history unless it completely repeated itself, down to location). Re-read after probably 25 years. The writing is still fantastic, and manages to find space for humor and humanity in amongst the crushing dread of nuclear holocaust. I hadn't recalled the intense discussion of Catholic theology, particularly regarding euthanasia/assisted suicide for those suffering from fatal radiation poisoning in the 3rd section of the book. I didn't remotely agree with the Catholic viewpoint, which was clearly favored by Miller in the story, but found it particularly poignant

Abandoned about 1/3rd in. Well-written, but neither post-apocalyptic fiction nor religion-based fiction are my bag, and this is both so I had a hard time maintaining my interest.

DNF. I’ve heard it’s a classic. It’s probably good, but the dialogue was too stilted for me.
