I'm so glad that I finally decided to read this book. My imagining that I kind of knew what it was about was so far off base that it's embarrassing. My biggest take away from this read is that I will now never understand why someone would call someone else an "Uncle Tom" and mean it as an insult. Tom didn't want to be a slave but being the Christian man he was, he tried to help everyone he could and do it to the best of his ability...including those that owned him. As one of the most influential books of all time, this novel requires a certain regard, regardless of its purple passages. I was quite surprised by the ironic tone and amusing satire of the politics of the South, which disappears when Stowe starts preaching. Despite the one-dimensionality of the characters of Uncle Tom and Little Eva, most characters are interesting and memorable.
