I'm always excited to see respected SF/F authors take on a female lead, but the execution of this narrative fell flat (and I really liked the First Law trilogy). It's tough to explain why I didn't like it without revealing important spoilers, as I maintained high hopes until about the last quarter of the book, which is where the characters fell apart for me and became props of the plot.
