This book was incredible. In it, Gay tells the story of a childhood trauma and the ways it impacts her own image of her body and herself into the present. As she grows into adulthood, her relationship to her body, and that trauma, become very, very complicated, and this memoir is Gay's exquisitely-vulnerable chronicling of her struggle to come to terms with the events (or rather, event) of her childhood and to feel comfortable in her own skin. I wish I could give this book 100 stars. Roxane has once again found my letters and read each one out loud.... While her motivations are wildly different than mine, I identify so strongly with her methods, her thoughts, her motivations, her words. I laughed, I cried, I sobbed, I nodded vigorously --- every page brought out a reaction. Now what I do with this, if I learn, if I move forward knowing that there are more out there, I couldn't say. I really love the opportunity to listen to an author reading their work. Roxane Gay does a lovely job, her reading is clear and the emotion is there, but not overwhelming. Even though the subject matter of this book is emotional, Gay writes with a clear head, though the repetitiveness of how she tells pieces of her story is meditative and emotional, without leaning on anything besides a clear retelling and potentially some anger which is well-deserved.
