C'era una volta una donna che scolpiva storie. Le scolpiva in ogni sorta di materiale. All'inizio lavorava con la neve, il fumo o le nuvole, perché i loro racconti erano temporanei, fuggevoli. Scomparsi in un istante, visibili e leggibili soltanto da coloro che, per caso, erano presenti nell'intervallo che separa l'incisione dalla disintegrazione, ma la scultrice preferiva così. Non lasciava tempo per preoccuparsi dei dettagli o dell Per me, un capolavoro 💓

C'era una volta una donna che scolpiva storie. Le scolpiva in ogni sorta di materiale. All'inizio lavorava con la neve, il fumo o le nuvole, perché i loro racconti erano temporanei, fuggevoli. Scomparsi in un istante, visibili e leggibili soltanto da coloro che, per caso, erano presenti nell'intervallo che separa l'incisione dalla disintegrazione, ma la scultrice preferiva così. Non lasciava tempo per preoccuparsi dei dettagli o delle imperfezioni. Le storie non restavano per essere messe in discussione o criticate o ripensate, da lei o dagli altri. Le storie c'erano, poi non c'erano più. Molte non venivano neanche lette prima della loro scomparsa, ma la scultrice le ricordava.
Storie d'amore appassionate che erano manipolate nello spazio vuoto fra due gocce di pioggia e svanivano con la fine della tempesta.
Intricate tragedie versate da bottiglie di vino e sorseggiate pensosamente, accompagnate da malinconia e formaggi raffinati.
Fiabe modellate con sabbia e conchiglie sulla battigia, cancellate lentamente da morbide onde di mare.
La scultrice ottenne apprezzamento e attirò folle di persone per le sue storie, partecipate come spettacoli teatrali mentre venivano scolpite e poi sciolte o sbriciolate o portate via dal vento. La donna lavorava con la luce e con l'ombra, il ghiaccio e il fuoco, e una volta scolpì una storia da una singola ciocca di capelli, ognuno strappato a un membro del pubblico e poi intrecciati insieme.
La gente la pregava di scolpire storie che fossero più stabili. I musei chiedevano delle mostre che durassero più di qualche minuto o poche ore.
La scultrice, gradualmente, lo concesse.
Scolpì storie nella cera e le collocò su dei carboni ardenti in modo che si sciogliessero, gocciolassero e scomparissero.
Dispose partecipanti volontari in composizioni di membra annodate e corpi intrecciati che sarebbero durate quanto la resistenza dei loro elementi viventi, mentre la storia cambiava a seconda dell'angolo da cui veniva guardata e poi cambiava ancora quando i modelli erano stanchi, o le mani scivolavano sulle cosce in evidenti colpi di scena.
Creò miti di lana, lavorando ai ferri pezzi così piccoli da poterli tenere in tasca, anche se leggendoli troppo spesso si disfacevano e aggrovigliavano.
Addestrò le api per edificare degli alveari su elaborati telai che formavano intere città con dolci abitanti e drammi amari.
Scolpì storie in alberi coltivati con cura, storie che continuavano a crescere e svilupparsi anche molto tempo dopo essere state abbandonate per limitare la loro narrazione.
Eppure la gente chiedeva a gran voce storie che potesse conservare.
La scultrice sperimentò. Costruì lanterne di metallo con minuscole manovelle che potevano essere girate per proiettare racconti sulle pareti, ponendo una candela nel mezzo. Studiò per un po' di tempo insieme a un orologiaio e costruì racconti a puntate che potevano essere portati in tasca e ricaricati, anche se alla fine gli ingranaggi si sarebbero consumati.
Scoprì che non le importava più che le storie durassero. Che alcuni ne godessero e altri no, ma questa è la natura di una storia. Non tutte le storie parlano a tutti gli ascoltatori, ma ogni ascoltatore può trovare, da qualche parte, in un momento qualsiasi, una storia che gli parli. In una forma o nell'altra.
Soltanto quando fu molto anziana la scultrice acconsentì a lavorare la pietra.
All'inizio si dimostrò difficile, ma alla fine la donna imparò a parlare con la pietra, a manipolarla e riconoscere i racconti che essa desiderava narrare e a scolpirli con la stessa facilità con cui aveva scolpito la pioggia, l'erba e le nuvole.
Incide visioni nel marmo, con pezzi mobili e lineamenti realistici. Scatole cinesi e indovinelli irrisolvibili, molteplici finali possibili lasciati invisibili e introvabile pezzi che rimanevano saldi e stabili e pezzi in costante movimento che si logoravano fino alla distruzione.
Scolpì i suoi sogni e i suoi desideri, le sue paure e i suoi incubi e lascio che si mescolassero fra di loro.

I read The Night Circus in 2018, so it's not that I didn't know what I was getting into here. I expected the dreamy atmosphere, the lovely writing, the gorgeous visuals, and I expected that there wouldn't be much plot or character development. Unfortunately, although the pleasure of the hazy, dreamy experience in The Night Circus balanced the hazy sort of plot and characterization, I didn't find the same to be true for The Starless Sea.

I expected to like The Starless Sea because the subjects - I read The Night Circus in 2018, so it's not that I didn't know what I was getting into here. I expected the dreamy atmosphere, the lovely writing, the gorgeous visuals, and I expected that there wouldn't be much plot or character development. Unfortunately, although the pleasure of the hazy, dreamy experience in The Night Circus balanced the hazy sort of plot and characterization, I didn't find the same to be true for The Starless Sea.

I expected to like The Starless Sea because the subjects - stories, libraries, narrative, mythology, even video games - are all ones that are quite personally important to me and certainly things that I enjoy reading and thinking about. But I didn't find Erin Morgenstern's style, which I enjoyed in The Night Circus, to be a particularly effective way of exploring those themes that so interest me. I think that part of the reason is that a circus is a performance and therefore actually quite well-suited to being described in lush detail - the visual spectacle of the magic circus was such a treat to read about, and the long descriptions of it made me feel like I was a visitor to the circus, experiencing it in the same way that a real visitor would. Circus acts don't need narrative structure to be compelling because it's the spectacle itself that's on show. But while I love the idea of the underground, labyrinthine library of the Harbor, it simply wasn't as interesting to read descriptions of, because much of it is just corridors of books and cozy rooms to read them in. There were some moments of description that I was truly delighted by, but I spent a lot of the book wishing for more like that (the dollhouse room, the ghostly party) and less of some of the other things.

What's more, Morgenstern is clearly really interested in the different ways that stories can be told (something that I am also quite interested in) but chose to take that in a different direction than I wanted. In what seems like a deliberate choice, Morgenstern makes her characters just chess pieces in a larger story, outside of their control, but I don't believe that that's what stories are about, even stories that are about time and fate and magic. This book begins with a fair amount of narrative tension that later ends up being completely undercut by the message of the book, which is that the story exists outside of individual characters. This means that the characters often act in ways that are merely them "playing their parts." For example, Zachary spends much of the book being disappointed that he did not walk through the door to the Starless Sea when he first found it as a child, but this disappointment is entirely ungrounded - the era of the Starless Sea that he's longing for happened long before he was born and he wouldn't have met Dorian if he had gone to the Harbor earlier. Many of the characters' emotions and motivations feel like this: that they act for the sake of the story and their emotions feel layered on top, confusingly portrayed and irrelevant to their actions.

If either of these two issues had been different - if the characters' motivations and emotions had been clearer or if the setting had been as vivid as the previous book - I think I would have enjoyed this very much: the writing was lovely and I don't mind a meandering story. Zachery Ezra Rawlins is a grad student in VT studying video games. He is a bit of loner spending most of his time in the library where he finds a strange book, Sweet Sorrows, which is not in the library's computer system. It gets stranger when he finds chapters about his own life experiences in the book which is much older than he is and mention of a harbor on the Starless Sea. I loved the night circus but this was just not gripping me at all. The narrative was like a sea coming towards you leaving sprinkles in the sand but no real feel for what it had done. I only get to page 75 and it requires too much of something that i don't have to continue. I loved the night circus but this too fabulist with no backbone
