I've never read this book before, nor did I realize that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and James Bond originated from the same creative mind. This is different from the movie, in that it really only introduces the characters, but their adventures are different. Fun book!

This book was very different from the film. The screenwriters just took the general idea of the magical car and its family (though there were changes in the family too), and wrote a totally new story about them. The book tells a simple, straightforward adventure story that was fine and all, but I expected more from the author of the James Bond stories. I have to say that this is a rare case where I preferred the film; too many songs, but oh! that Child-catcher!
I mostly picked this up because I was curious how much of the movie came from the book. The answer: not much. I love the movie; the book is ok I guess, but it didn’t really grab me. It certainly didn’t deliver any sort of better understanding of the movie characters (though this is really not the book’s fault). I maybe would have enjoyed it more if I were in the target audience… I’m not sure my own kiddos would even understand parts of it, since they aren’t British.

A good adventure for young kids; three stars because I "liked it." I think a little more suspense during the adventure that happens after the intended picnic may have made me "really like it." Definitely has the feeling that more adventures were planned, but alas, it was not meant to be.

I read this book as a kid because, well, because I read everything, and because I really liked the movie. But I didn't realize until I was in my 30s that the guy who wrote this is the same guy who wrote James Bond.
