This was a fascinating account of the girl behind the infamous book Lolita. I enjoyed how the real life story and the background of the writing of the book were intertwined.
The book is well worth reading except Lolita fashion in Japan has nothing to do w sexualized Lolita as a quick Google would’ve told this author. It was based off a misheard, Portuguese I believe, word that sounded “kawaii” to the ear & the fashion itself is simply based off of Victorian fashion & tbh this assumption being spouted as fact has caused those in that subculture to be harassed by disgusting men. That needed to be said considering this book is about a few victims of CSA.
To be honest, I am disappointed. The premise sounded like this will be the story of Sally Horner, the little girl long-believed to be the inspiration behind Nabokov's Lolita. Weinman starts by saying that Sally's story deserved to be heard, that she's been pushed out of the history for way too long (and Nabokov always denied that she was the inspiration for his Lolita).
