It's been ages since I read a Commissario Guido Brunetti tale, I'd forgotten how good they are. He is an exemplary character: a good, compassionate officer & family man, & excellent at managing his superior, Vice-Questore Patta. I enjoy Brunetti's ruminations about, & interaction with, his family, his work colleagues & his cases.
The resolution of the crimes in this tale wasn't terribly satisfactory, tending to more realistic likelihoods, I suppose. As this is fiction, I would have been happy wit ...more

In this second Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery, Leon crafts a plot that includes a conspiracy involving the American military, Italian business interests and the Mafia.
A dead man is found floating in the canal. He is without identification but has three U.S. coins in his pocket. He also has an expertly placed stab wound in his side; someone knew what he was doing when he stabbed the victim between the ribs and directly into the heart. I read the first in this series in 2018 and made a mental note (unfortunately not a written one!) to read more. I then saw this on offer on Bookbub and bought it and it has started me back on the path of getting to know this highly likable and human police officer as well as his family. His relationship with his family (wife and two children) is one of the things I like best and I look forward to getting to know them better as I gradually work through the series - 29 books, YES! Set in Venice wh

The second book of the Commissario Brunetti series. A young American’s body is found in a canal in Venice. Commissario Brunetti comes to believe that it is not the outcome of a mugging gone wrong. Leon does an amazing job of bringing the character of Venice to the reader—an almost small town, insulated vibe, where the natives know each other and view non-Venetians with suspicion.
The reader of this edition does a wonderful job. I particularly liked his rendition of the flat American accents.

I loved the characters and the glimpse of Venetian life. The mystery was good, a bit dark at times, but still had a lot of twists to it. I really do like this series.
