What I found most fascinating about this book is the strength and independence of an invigorating female protagonist. Beyond her years in self-awareness and maturity, Frankie has a deep significance about her; she finds the symbolism in the world around her and that creates purpose and meaning for her. Frankie is easy to relate to and I found myself saying "You Go Girl!" and "Don't let that boy boss you around!" Full Disclosure: I read this for a gender representation in children's and youth lit class for my MLIS and I wouldn't have read it otherwise. I wouldn't have even known about it... I did like Lockhart's other novel, We Were Liars, though. I'm not entirely sure why I'm giving this four stars because it took me nearly half the novel to get into it. Love the idea of neglected positives and the invisible presence of the authority! It would be so cool to be a member of the Basset Hounds- however, the excessive authority of the King would be excrutiatingly painful.
