This book was a chilling portrait of an abusive relationship and its aftermath. When Catherine meets Lee, she effortlessly lets him in to her life. Sure, he doesn't talk much and his job is mysterious and sometimes he disappears for days at a time, but he's handsome and a good lover and all of her friends are jealous, so what's the harm, right?

I picked this up based on a coworker's recommendation that it's a good readalike for Gone Girl, and was very happy for the tip. I'm not usually into suspense, but the author does a great job of creating a chilling story and atmosphere, and it was nearly impossible to put it down. I loved that the story toggles between the past and the current day, so the reader knows that something terrible has happened but still has to keep reading to find out the details of what made this woman into an emotion
