I'm almost finished with this. I'm disappointed. Loved the trilogy about WWI, in those voices. This voice . . . Why oh why go anachronistic? It's very annoying to read about Trojan women referring to "bums" and talking cockney. We don't know this Greek or Trojan diction. Keep it simple. And for Briseis, I think a third person p.o.v. would have elicited more of the sympathy Barker (for excellent reasons) wants us to feel. There seems to be a fashion for retelling the story of Troy these days, at least I'm reading a lot of those. This is the fall of Troy from the women's point of view, and with no Trojan horse. It's a (mostly) first-person telling by Briseis, Achilles' prize after the sacking of Lyrnessus, Achilles who murdered her husband and brothers.
