I was wondering if this would be a sort of Flavia de Luce/Harriet the Spy type of mystery, with an amusing and precocious young girl detective character. Instead, it became a study of a neighborhood's ugly underside, and I was not amused. Maybe I should have been, but written humor is rough, and this too often came across to me as mean.

I chose this for the title and am glad I did, even if I wasn’t thinking Biblical at the time, more farming! It takes place within the confines of a small street in an unnamed town in Norfolk in the long hot heat-wave of the summer of 1976, a time I remember well as I was teaching then on the south coast of England.
