I'm loathe to give a bad review because the story of Lale and Gita is a lovely one of two people finding love and surviving the harshest conditions. (Who doesn't love love?) I had to remind myself over and over that this book is classified as historical fiction so we have no idea how much of it is real and how much is the author's ideas. What a sad story! I dual read this and listened to it on audio. I think the narrator was German and was reading a European edition as some of the words were changed. For example while I had soccer he read football. Or when it was mentioned as girls in the book he said women. Sometimes I found it distracting but I enjoyed his voice. The story was just beautiful and I hadn’t realized it was a true story. It makes it even more sad. I’m definitely going to read “Cilka’s Journey” when it comes in the

If this was not centered on real people, it would be completely unbelievable. I have read MANY WWII/Holocaust-related books. This one is unique in the unbelievably good fortune that Lale experiences in his three years of imprisonment.
