I wish this true-to-life story had a better storyteller. After Elie Wiesel's harrowing trilogy, I could not bear to read another book about the Holocaust for years. The jejune writing in The Tattooist of Auschwitz made it, for lack of a better word, more approachable; however, it is such a disservice to the story, which premise I liked.

4.5 stars. This book gives a perspective inside the concentration camp that often times is vilified-helping the Nazis. I loved Lale and his strong spirit and kind heart. Great book. The only reason it’s not a solid 5 is the afterword is a bit muddled and confusing. There is a part written by Lale’s son, but it doesn’t label it as written by him. Other than that it’s a good good book. Trio B.C.

I feel bad that I didn't like this book more, especially since it's a novel based on the memories of one of the characters in it, and was written with the input of that person's child. It just didn't connect with me, and I finished with the feeling of "meh," which is most definitely not the reaction you would expect to have to a novel about a personal story from a horrific time.

This story was told in a very captivating way while still highlighting both the horrors of Auschwitz and the hope and resilience that many of the captive exhibited.
