What Members Thought
At first, I wasn't crazy about this book, but it slowly grew on me. I expected a straight up detective mystery, but this is more of an over-the-top cozy mystery, with outsized characters who are turned into caricatures, and ludicrous situations played for humor (a baby elephant sitting in your living room watching soap operas with you???). Once I adjusted my expectations, I found I enjoyed this quite a bit. Inspector Chopra is a very likeable person, always seeking to do the right thing, kind

I loved the setting and the immersion into the culture of India in this light-ish mystery novel set in Madras. Inspector Chopra and his wife are a great example of a loving couple. Baby Ganesh is a cute addition. I found the indsight into corruption, politics and social norms, especially the status of women, illuminating. However the mystery was rather so-so, and relied on a lot of mindblowingly stupid heroics and lucky coincidences. Overall I enjoyed it, but it is not up to Dr. Siri standards.

Absolutely amazing!
The mystery is exciting, interesting, a little "easy", perhaps, but nothing that takes away from the enjoyment.
Ashwin and Poppy's relationship is amazing, so lovely, and the characters are great
Ashwin and Ganesha's relationship is also amazing, I love how Vaseem Khan uses the elephant in the story...
And the end... [sob]
Have some Cadbury milk chocolate bars ready when you read this book. You might want some. :-) ...more

Very enjoyable first in series, more on the procedural side with cozy elements. Very much in the same vein as Tarquin Hall's Vish Puri series.

Another fun crime mystery series set in India, from the author of the Malabar House series.
