This is a very difficult book to define in that it produced such a range of emotions whilst reading it. I found the beginning quite slow, it seemed like we were walking a narrative line of love and dependence in unequal relationships. However the whole was so much more, beautifully written, sparse prose and twists that i simply was not expecting. The characterisation is so well done. It took me a long time to get into this book, in part because of all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but also in part because I just did not care for it at first. Had it not been written by John Boyne, whose “The Heart’s Invisible Furies” was among my favorite books of 2017, I might have simply abandoned it. I really wanted to like this book after having read and loved The Heart's Invisible Furies but I didn't like the main character or the side characters so it was hard to keep going. I got to at least 20% of the book so I did give it a go but there are too many other books out there for me to keep forcing myself on this one. ...more
