Seeing this on the Telegraphy Must-Read list prompted me to read it, realising that I'm not sure I've ever read it before. I knew one or two of the individual tales - like How the Elephant Got it's Trunk - but some of them are completely new to me. Admittedly the language and some of the comments and attitudes are old fashioned, very much a product of its time. But I enjoyed them nonetheless.

In no way are these stories even remotely politically correct. But they are entertaining, at times downright funny. Trying to read them out loud to my children was a challenge at times (yay for being able to just call the girl Taffy!) but they feel like they're MEANT to be read out loud. The language, the rhythm and style are unique and beautiful in its own way. The stories made my children laugh, and brought on a lot of discussion on how things came to be.
