Of course, I’ve heard of H P Lovecraft for years, but I’d never bothered to read anything by him. Just not my genre of choice. But I happened to have this in the house, courtesy of Penguin Random House (the publisher gifted me a set of their new “orange” Penguin Classics a few years ago), and it carries the “science fiction” tag so it fit a challenge.

I was curious what H.P. Lovecraft was all about. Now I know. Check.
I don't get horror. I never understood the need for chills and ghost stories. So probably my opinion does not count. That said, I found it boring, ridiculous, pointless and overwrought, and not at all scary. If this quote scares you, knock yourself out:

Lovecraft is like a super-exaggerated story told by your best friend; overly dramatic in a good way. Bizarre stories!
It is interesting... racist, of course, but that would have come up sooner or later.
I like the "non euclidean geometry" that makes one uncertain of if the sea is level... and acute angles that behave like obtuse angles. Lovecraft's stories give one this kind of feeling, one isn't really certain of anything :-D
Reminds me of the great late Andrew Gold's The Creature from the Tub
