Kate Shugak used to be an investigator for the DA in Anchorage – until she was seriously injured. Now she lives a reclusive life on the edge of a national park, her familial land where she was raised. When a young park ranger goes missing people assume the winter weather got to the inexperienced “Outsider.” But when the seasoned investigator sent to track him down also disappears it’s clear that something more than weather is involved. It is OK. This is a murder-mystery with an interesting setting--a national park in Alaska. The protagonist, Kate Shugak, is a Native Alaskan who has returned to near the village where she grew up. There is a little humor and some pathos. There is a snap shot of the conflicts around natural resources and development on Federal land. This book started out slowly - there was far too much 'information dump' and not enough story at least for the first couple of chapters. Although finding out about Alaska was interesting, it could have been done in a much more entertaining way. However, the story picked up as Kate starts investigating what is looking more and more like a double murder and by the end of the book, I was really enjoying it. It seems to be an interesting, and very different crime series.

But, when she is asked to find two missing men who have disappeared while in "the Park" (her home territory), she reluctantly agrees. Does it help that the man asking is someone she once cared for? Hmmm.

First of the Kate Shugak series. It's a good series, based in Alaska, and evoking the wildness of the wilderness. Decent crime mysteries. The heroine is a native Alaskan who returned to 'the Park' after working for the DAs office in Ancorage and is now its unofficial private detective.
