What Members Thought
I think listening to this book on audio adds much to the telling of the stories. The addition of music and the narrators accent provided richness. Recommend.
This is a tremendous read for any mature upper elementary reader or older. It is a work of historical fiction and weaves in the vibrant theme of music and the darker theme of discrimination; the three sections may break your heart a little, but the important thing is to stick with it. It is really a fairy tale with three episodes set in different times/places followed by a conclusion which brings it all together, so though it may look too long for some young readers, it is very manageable.
Beautifully written, wandering through an ugly and difficult time through history, binding us all together through music.
Each section of the book left me hanging in the most delightful way, wondering how each character's story concluded, certain that I would find out in the end. The ending had them braided together and when I realized what happened, became covered in goosebumps.
I seriously considered picking up my son's harmonica and giving it a blow to see if it had the magical woodwind music inside. ...more
