4.5. I LOVE books like this, that are less about the story and more about the intensely detailed depiction of historical London and all its lush, messy atmosphere. The setting, plot, and writing feel slightly otherworldly, like you're viewing everything through water. I loved that for all the richness, it boils down to a very sweet and simple love story.

One of my very favorites of the year. Imogen Hermes Gowar does an impeccable job in re-creating the world of late 18th century London. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and the story and characters are completely engrossing. I did this one as an audiobook and the reader is fantastic as well.
