Patricia Lockwood is a master wordsmith. The prose in this comic memoir is often exquisite. Ms. Lockwood grew up under unusual circumstances: her father is a Catholic priest. Her mother was a good Catholic girl who married a man who later became a Lutheran minister, but then converted to Catholicism, and through some quirky rule, was able to be ordained and keep his wife and family. Spoiler alert (but not really)... Priestdaddy is pretty much an asshole. I got so fed up that I even wondered why Lockwood would want
to write a book about him in the first place. I should say that it's ostensibly about him, but it's really more about her mother and the shit she has to/has had to put up with from him. He's such a pain in the ass that the "warts and all" portrayal here is really just
the warts...you never really see any other side of him that makes you like him at all. ...more
