That was definitely a mind blowing read. The book's world is constructed so carefully, confusing at the beginning but very satisfying at the end.

This story is like a giant boulder (maybe one of those glacial erratics): it gets rolling slowly, and ominously, and it gradually picks up more and more speed until I was completely unable to set it down. (I'll be honest and say it wasn't really a five star read until the ending. What a powerful ending. I'm really glad I don't have to wait for the next book to be published - props to me for waiting for the full series to be finished!)

It's been a long time since I read a fantasy novel like this.
The Fifth Season is the first of a trilogy, so don't expect a complete story here. It took me a little while to get into, because there is a lot of world building. The world of this story is not like our own. There is one single continent, full of "comms" that are settlements. There is also a caste system, and people are named by their function, like Strongbacks, or Leadership. And every so often there is a big enough "shake" to throw ...more

This was good, and while I was reading I was very interested in the world-building. But once I got to the end, it curiously failed to make me want to read further. Maybe the world is too damn bleak overall, or maybe it's too hard for me to connect with the main characters. I am glad I read this, but I'm satisfied to put it down and try something else, rather than reading on.

This was a fantastic fantasy read--dark but not too depressing (the blurb on the back of the book talking about the death of a murdered son and missing daughter almost made me not pick it up). I loved the main characters and the world building. I am really interested in where this series goes next. The only problem: a long wait until book 2.
I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but this book was better than expected. A very good example of the apocalyptic genre.
