This is it.… I clench my clammy fists.
This is where we’re supposed to go.
“You ready?” Amari asks.
No. It’s written all over my face. But with her nudge, I take the first step, leading us down the cold stairwell.
Recommended for fans of the Red Queen and Red Rising series.
This. Was. Such. A. Snoozefest.
You know how in the old days books had two or three subtitles? This book could be properly titled:

or, teens standing and ...more
I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn't do much for me. It felt slow to start, picked up a bit in the middle, and then ended feeling muddled again. The characters were well-drawn and interesting and it's always refreshing to explore fantasy not set against the default European backdrop. But despite all this, I had trouble staying with this story. Maybe that's due to distracting narration, as I listened to the audio version, or just to me being too distracted for an epic fantasy. At

Children of Blood and Bone is a YA fantasy based on a Nigerian religious tradition. In Adeyemi's world, the Magi once had powers that were tied to the gods: being able to raise the dead (in ghost form), manipulate fire or water or wind or earth, manipulate dreams and feel what others feel, etc. Due to a personal tragedy, the current king has killed all of the adult Magi and made it so that magic has disappeared, and continues to torture and discriminate against the Magi who were children and hav

I had been hearing about this debut YA fantasy book for awhile and I am very happy that the book lived up to the hype. The book takes place in the land of Orïsha where magic has been lost due to the actions of the king. An ancient scroll, one of the artifacts needed to restore magic, has been found and a quest begins to restore magic to the land while the king's forces are in pursuit.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Every time a solution was needed the most complicated contrived one was chosen. The heroes we're wishy washy, lacking confidence, unreliable. Too bad. I really wanted to like it. The world the author created and the characters she made had such potential to be great, but they just disappointed me terribly.

I enjoyed the first 50 pages, but it never got deeper than surface level. I'm not sure if this is just because I don't like reading young adult, or if it was a particularly shallow young adult. I was expecting so much more. The characters felt interchangeable, and there was no complexity to anything. There was so much awkward exposition. It felt really shallow, but also really long, which was a bad combination for me. I've never read young adult unless I had to, so maybe I'm just not used to the

The world was rich and vibrant. I liked the characters well enough, the instalove was eh, I could see Amari and Tzain better. Strong female characters though.
