This is the first Alice Hoffman book I have read. I was disappointed! I expected from the description to be thoroughly enchanted by the world of the book: historical New York, freak shows, orthodox Jews, the seamy underbelly of Manhattan. But the book didn't draw me in. I wasn't interested in the characters, didn't really care about their supposedly deep revelations, and didn't understand why, if they love the each other so much, they didn't even meet until halfway through the book. I found the title intriguing. The subject matter appealing. I savor books about freak shows, circuses, carnivals. The setting of this book is Coney Island, the early days. The first decades of the last century. That reeled me right in. The tale was rather interesting from a historical perspective. Coney Island and early labor issues.
