What Members Thought
A perfect title for this book. Young brothers deliver papers on their bikes, a high school girl suspects she is pregnant, a couple of farmers go about the daily chores of caring for their livestock, a wife and mother sinks into depression. As the seasons change and weather comes through, Haruf elegantly tells their stories of life and death on the eastern plains of Colorado. So simple and, yet, so beautiful.
Excellent prose.
Interesting characters, if somewhat stylized. I enjoyed
reading the stories of the juvenile characters, which is
not always the case.
My favorite adult characters were Maggie Jones and the
elderly and feisty (but kindly) McPheron brothers.
I found Tom Guthrie an irritating one to read about, due
to his seemingly low social intelligence. Inexplicably,
though, Maggie seemed quite fond of him. (It was a
small town, remember.)
