Nadine in NY Jones
The problem with an author who is a psychopath/sociopath, it turns out, is that he has zero empathy for other people. In other words, he has no idea how other people think or feel or speak. All of the conversations and reactions in this book feel false and stilted. He has no idea how people pass the time, what their habits or hobbies or preferences might be. Everything in this book that is intended to make the characters have, you know, a character, feels fake and forced. Anna pontificates. Anna ...more

DNF at about 1/3 of the way through. Perhaps the most telling thing is I quit just as we got to the murder scene. If you've been bored for the run of the book, and you're still bored while reading about someone being stabbed, it's time to give up.

Evidently this author is a big fat liar and awful person, but the real reason not to read this is it's desperately tedious, with no one to root for. Not only is the main character stupid and dull, with a main character trait of "drinks enough to kill an

Shameless collage of movie plots, especially the culminating scene. The expose on the author was more interesting. That said, this is still a page-turner and representative of its genre.

Audible -- Great performance
Reminiscent of Girl on the Train....unreliable narrator who thinks she sees a murder. Compounded by her agoraphobia, she tries to figure out if her neighbor really got killed. Lots of twists and turns. Entertaining. Engaging.

A solid psychological thriller. Gets really deep at times but overall I liked the narrator. Reads like a classic film noir movie and I kept picturing Robert Mitchum as one of the main characters in a black and white movie in my head while reading the second half. I really enjoyed all the noir film references scattered throughout as well.
