So, if Sally Thorne re-wrote The Thirteenth Tale, and made it about Elizabeth Taylor*, and included bitchy emails and IMs, you might have something similar to this book. That's all okay, but it's not what I was expecting. It's not the book’s fault, but I was annoyed that this ended up being very chick-lit-y, when reviews said it was decidedly NOT chick lit.

Let it be known now: this is definitely what I consider "chick lit."

4.5. Loved every piece of Evelyn’s story. Took off half a star because Monique felt a bit flat to me and because I thought her reaction to the news she received at the end was overblown for the sake of the plot. Evelyn, though, was FANTASTIC, and I’m glad most of the book was devoted to her gripping biography.

Monique Grant, recently separated from her husband and going nowhere in her magazine career, is floored when her boss tells her that she has been requested to conduct an interview with Evelyn Hugo, a mid-century Hollywood icon who has been very reclusive. When Monique arrives at Evelyn's apartment, she finds out that Evelyn isn't interested in an article, she wants Monique to write her biography. And it has to be done now.

Entertaining fiction read. Old Hollywood, glamour, love... I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is great. There's a big LGBT theme that I wasn't expecting but enjoyed. The author captured some of the pain and beauty of relationships in general and really tugged at your heartstrings sometimes. ...more
