E mezzo (potenzialmente quattro).

Vi giuro che fino a tre quarti avrei dato cinque stelle piene al romanzo, ma leggendo la fine proprio non ce l'ho fatta: una parte di colpa va all'autore che non ha saputo gestire alcuni elementi in modo ottimale (ma ve ne parlo più avanti) e in larga parte da una mia incapacità di accettare lo svolgimento dei fatti, il modus operandi dei personaggi e il messaggio finale. No, proprio no: una grande rabbia per questo schifo e l'impotenza di non poter far nulla (lo E mezzo (potenzialmente quattro).

No, proprio no: una grande rabbia per questo schifo e l'impotenza di non poter far nulla (lo so, è un libro, ma io mi arrabbio ugualmente! :D) mi hanno accompagnato per le ultime, sgradevolissime, 50 pagine. So che questa è una cosa del tutto personale, quindi magari un altro lettore non si lascerà scalfire.. Ma io pur avendolo finito ieri, ho ancora un po' il sapore acido in bocca che mi ha lasciato.. :/

Il romanzo è geniale: l'intera storia viene narrata nell'arco della cena al ristorante di super lusso in cui si incontrano i due fratelli e le relative mogli: i capitoli sono scanditi a seconda della portata e tramite flashback viene ricostruita non solo la vicenda centrale che porta le due famiglie a riunirsi, ma anche un background dei personaggi, presentati attraverso l'occhio cinico (e cattivo) di Paul, voce narrante. All'inizio, mi sono sentita enormemente in sintonia con Paul, l'ho trovato geniale e caustico quanto basta.. Ho odiato con le sue parole e i suoi occhi Serge, il fratello candidato a diventare breve primo ministro. Con la narrazione di Paul, è stato facile vedere tutto bianco e nero e prendere le sue parti.. Mi sono poi ricreduta, ma accidenti se l'autore ha fatto un buon lavoro di manipolazione!!
Mi è piaciuto il fatto che nulla è come appare: pagina dopo pagina, la narrzione di Paul mi stupiva e rimescolava le carte in gioco facendomi riorganizzare le idee circa gli avvenimenti passati e futuri.. Mi piace che le mie idee di lettrice vengano continuamente messe in discussione!
Ad un certo punto l'autore perde un po' il filo dei suoi pensieri e lo fa perdere di conseguenza anche ai suoi lettori: tira in ballo elementi un po' a casaccio, omette cose perché.. "Non voglio violare la sua privasi" (Ma serio??) e lascia le cose un po' non dette.
Qui mi sono iniziata a stranire soprattutto perché tre dei quattro personaggi erano pronti a proteggere i figli a qualsiasi costo, nonostante la terribile azione che hanno commesso. La cosa mi ha disgustato, ho provato ad immedesimarmi pensando a quanto potrei perdonare ai miei figli.. E la risposta è stata che ci sono cose troppo gravi per poter far vincere l'amore materno: uccidere per divertimento, per 'idiozia' una barbona la cui unica colpa è stata quella di puzzare'.. Io proprio non lo accetto.
Da quando ho visto delinearsi questa linea di pensiero, un profondo disagio e disgusto si sono impossessati di me e non mi hanno più lasciato: il finale è davvero troppo becero, troppo degradante e semplicemente'troppo' per i miei gusti.

Avrei davvero preferito fermarmi al secondo, senza passare per dolce e mancia.. Mi ha avvelenato la lettura!! ...more

How far would you go to protect your kids? In the case of The Dinner, the answer is too far. (view spoiler) Two couples meet in a restaurant ostensibly to have dinner - Serge and Babbette arrive shortly after Paul and Claire have been seated. Soon we find that this is an excuse for a conversation, but I had to revise my guess at what that conversation was about several times before the horrifying truth present How far would you go to protect your kids? In the case of The Dinner, the answer is too far. (view spoiler) Two couples meet in a restaurant ostensibly to have dinner - Serge and Babbette arrive shortly after Paul and Claire have been seated. Soon we find that this is an excuse for a conversation, but I had to revise my guess at what that conversation was about several times before the horrifying truth presented itself. As the dinner moves from course to course, spanning appetizers through after-dinner drinks, more truth is revealed not only about the conversation but about the couples and their children, and the relationship between them, as well. Not one detail ever makes you feel better about the characters or their actions, instead there is the same hard ball of cold dread in your stomach that Paul describes feeling from time to time in his own stomach. As the story unfolds, you want to look away but you just can't, much like Paul each time he snooped into papers and messages that didn't belong to him and yet which he knew would change the course of his life forever. Who is the worst person in this story? It's a little hard to say, only that in the beginning I thought it was one person, but by the end I knew that it wasn't.

Yikes. I rate this book with 4 stars not because I loved it (I would prefer never to think on these characters or what they've done again), but because it was so masterfully written and the reveal of truth after truth was so seamlessly rolled out as to really draw out the tension and keep the reader guessing about not only the events that had taken place but about the true nature of all the people involved in them. (view spoiler) I'm going to leave it at that, because I think too much discussion will just spoil the book's surprises, and the element of surprise is a real factor to this story. ...more

This book is going to stick with me in one of those haunting, disturbing ways. There was not one redeeming quality in any of the sociopathic characters. I was attracted to read this book by the concept of the story being told through the courses of one dinner. It does make you question the lengths you would go to for your children. I imagine it would make for a fantastic book club discussion...

Worst book ever! If I could give it a 0 I would. The narrator just rambled on and on dragging out the book for far longer than it needed to be. I wish that I would have just given up on it when it took me three tries to get started on it.

This was a book that i thought took far too long to get off the ground - over a third of the way through before getting to the real issues. However it was subtly menacing and disturbing. The author brought it all together in the end.
