I don't know why it took me so long to read this book. I hope many of us can remember when we were so poor that a meal was a big deal. We were poor because we were following our dreams and weren't following our expected path. It's a big risk but the payoff is great when it happens.

I didn't know very much about Patti Smith or Robert Mapplethorpe prior to reading this book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Patti Smith reads it herself and even sings in one section. I was taken back to New York City in the 60's and 70's and all the amazing people she crossed paths with, especially at the Chelsea Hotel. Beautifully written about the incredible journey the two had together.
