“Once upon a time,” she said to him, to the world, to herself, “in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom.... very much.”
These books are like Hershey kisses for me: I like them, I inexplicably can't stay away, but I don't really think they're good, and I wouldn't recommend them to others.
12 pages in and I'm remembering why I lost interest in this series. Ugh, all the posturing!!

Three different story arcs to keep up that are building up to coming together but didn't in this book. I will have to read the next one to see how it all plays out, though things look dire for a couple of characters at the moment!

This is the book where you really see the series start to move and realize it's about more than just Celaena's story. It was good to see her outside the castle environment, though the politics are just as thick. Rowan is also a great addition to the story, as someone who can really challenge her, on multiple levels. This book is also where we really dig into the witches, with the introduction of Manon and the Ironteeth witches. Can't wait to continue the series!

I have loved this series until this book--I will still read all her books because I love the characters, but this book was a bit harder to read than the other two which were fantastic. This book had more magic and the main character felt sorry for herself a bit too long--making the first 200 pages slow reading.
Glad that I listened to those who told me that the books improve further into the series.
