Interesting to reread these adventures on the Mississippi to prep for Everett's James. While Huck's name is in the title, the story really is about Jim so I'm even more excited to read James. The poor man relying on the whims of these boys for his safety and freedom. The trauma that Huck went through to justify not turning Jim in was fascinating. I hate to admit it was a slog to get through this but it was, and I really didn’t enjoy it a lot while appreciating Twain’s skill as a writer and moralist. While Huck shows some aspects of treating Jim as less than him, his final decision is completely right, and he learns a lot as he travels with Jim. The language is offensive, although it clearly wasn’t at the time Twain wrote it, but it’s still hard to read especially as I won’t even write it, ever. There were parts that were very humorous, a
