I first read this book when I was eleven years old. Not the full version; the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books for Young Readers version. I still have it, although I did later read the unabridged version about ten years later when I acquired a set of most of Mark Twain’s novels in my nascent library as a young bride. Now 47 years after that last reading, I decided to re-read it before diving into Percival Everett’s James, which is a reimagining of the tale as told by Jim.
