Mark Twain wrote Huck Finn as a sequel to Tom Sawyer. His original plan was to follow Huck into adulthood but after working on the book for several years he lost interest. When he eventually came back to Huck’s story, he abandoned his idea of telling Huck’s life story and decided instead to write it as a sort of continuation of Tom Sawyer.

I read this back in sophomore English -- or maybe I just read the first half of it, because I could not at all remember much of anything after Huck and Jim "ran by Cairo." I remember struggling with this book the first time around, and at first, this go-around was not much better. My problem was that I was reading in short spurts between tending the kids. Rereading this (audio) in 2024 after reading "James", a retelling. This made me "like" Twain's version a lot better.
