I think I have a new favorite superhero. Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal is the first graphic novel about a new superhero. Although, there has been a Ms. Marvel before, Kamala is a new person picking up the mantle. What makes her interesting to me is she is a high school student in Jersey City, NJ who happens to be muslim. Because she is a teenager, she shares a lot of the traits that I enjoy about early Spiderman. She is optimistic and hopeful and really wants do good things with her power, but s ...more

Disclaimer: I am not a super-hero comics reader. In fact, this is the first one I've read in my entire life. So I guess it isn't surprising that I was much more interested in the panels that dealt with Kamala's relationships with her family, friends, and religious community than I was in the hero/action type panels. Overall I was really impressed, though I don't know if I'll keep reading -- I don't think it was enough to change me into someone who really wants to read about super heroes. ...more

I loved this book! This is my new favorite comic book hero/ine. Kamala Khan is not normal, but not a superhero, just a geeky girl from a religious family--until she is suddenly a superhero too. I love the reality of a teenage girl, already dealing with being "that weird Muslim girl" and the challenges that come with that life in Jersey City, now struggling to understand her new-found powers, what that power means for her, what that responsibility means...I love seeing a devout Muslim family in a ...more

This was ... ok.

I can see why it was such a sensation when it was published, because this is very much the superhero we need. She's just a regular, middle class Muslim, Pakistani-American girl from Jersey City, NJ. (Why the powers chose her over the hundreds of other people out and about in Jersey City that night is unclear. I guess that is made clear in future episodes?). Kamala and her family and friends are very appealing.

But ... at the same time ... I was kind of bored. Not much happens,

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It has a good moral and the storyline was easy to follow. Isabelle likes this one as well.

This is a fun superhero origin story, with a new kind of American hero - a Jersey girl of Pakistani extraction, who battles her own identity issues and her family's expectations at least as much as bad guys.

This was an intriguing start, but I felt like there should have been more story - it's more the setup for an adventure than an adventure itself. Still, I can't complain, given that it was free to read on Kindle Unlimited. I'll definitely check out the next volume!

Fun and some great lines.

Really fun story

The best part is Ironman holding the sloth stuffed animal, but I loved the story. Kamala was awesome and I liked seeing her grow into her own kind of hero. I loved her family.
