What Members Thought
I enjoyed this take on Pride and Prejudice. But I thought it was longer than it needed to be and the main characters could have been more fleshed out, especially Darcy. I also didn't care for this version of Elizabeth Bennet. I didn't really like her. Somehow though this novel did bring me into the family drama and I was invested in how things were going to turn out. The modern versions of events from the original novel were amusing as well. I also thought the author got the sarcastic wit and to

Thanks to the publisher for an advance reader's copy!
Eligible was basically everything I've wanted from The Austen Project: a nearly faithful update of Pride and Prejudice, reworked in a way that made complete sense in the modern world. Lydia's elopement was still shocking! I was convinced that this couldn't be done in the 2010s, but Curtis Sittenfeld found an angle that toed a careful line between shock and acceptance by different members of the family. The reality show angle was a little bit ...more

Super fast and enjoyable read, and way brainier than I expected! It was just as fun to read and compare with the characters and plot twists and turns with Pride and Prejudice as it was to read for itself. Obviously doesn't exactly stack up to the original, but it's obvious that this isn't the intent. The drawings of the Bennet family were clever and really well-done, as was that of Darcy. Jane kind of annoyed me the whole time but to be fair Jane annoyed me in the original, too. I also loved the

I don't even know where to begin with this dumpster fire. Maybe the best thing to do is make a list.
1) Poor Jane Austen. There's going to be a hell of a mess from all of the dirt that her grave spinning uproots.
2) These characters are despicable. Even Liz and Darcy are just yucky.
3) Speaking of baskets of deplorables, this shit is just offensive. References to transpeople as "trannys" and having a "birth defect"? Transgenderism is also referred to as "elective," like people just switch sexualit ...more

I wasn't going to read this. First, Pride and Prejudice is one of my top 5 favorite books ever, maybe top 2. It's only of a handful of books I've re-read, I'm not a re-reader. Second, I don't typically like modern retellings of classics, and I feel like that whole genre is so overdone. Third, I am so not into the whole reality show thing, especially shows like The Bachelor. However, I needed to read a retelling of a classic for the Pop Sugar challenge, so I picked this one (I've already read P&P
