So, this book is one of those self-publishing "success stories" folks love to yammer on about.

When Grahame first wrote "The Wind in the Willows," no one wanted to publish it. He self-published it, it gained great popularity, now it's a classic, etc.

But all I could think as I read it was that I could see why no one wanted to publish it.

Talking animal stories are not really my cup of tea, but I've read plenty of them that were done well (Watership Down, Bambi, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH). T

I went back and forth between thinking this children's classic was completely weird to rather charming. I ended on the charming side. There was plenty of nonsensical stuff that drove my practical self a little crazy (still trying to figure out how the Toad could fit in a human washerwoman's clothing -- and how everyone could actually be fooled by that disguise??), but in the end I found these four animal characters quite endearing. This is one of those books that you can't help but love. It wasn't necessarily action-packed, but I fell in love with the animals in the book, and enjoyed the light reading it provided. ...more
